The ₹10 Lakh Business You Can Start From Home in India Right Now- Part 2: Services

Why Services Beat Products (At Least at the Start)

As mentioned in Part 1 of this series, product-based home businesses involve making products, packaging them, and then shipping them. Products are very interesting, but they entail inventory risks, complicated logistics issues, and capital that might be difficult to raise.

This is where services come in. You will be selling your time, your expertise, or your connections, which means that there will be no requirement for stockpiling any raw material, renting out any warehouse space, or registering legally before getting started. For service-based home businesses in India, all that is required is a laptop computer and an active internet connection.

₹10 lakhs or close to ₹83,000 per month appears to be a very high number. However, once you think about it, this target becomes easily achievable after Year 2 or Year 3 of your journey. Here are a few successful ideas.

1. Content Writing & SEO Services

There has been a surge in demand for high-quality content in English and Hindi in the past three years. Everyone, from brands and SaaS firms, D2C startups, coaching firms to government-funded platforms, are looking for writers who can create high-quality, thoroughly researched and SEO-optimized content.

The average rate for content writers in India ranges from ₹3 to ₹10 per word, while a long-form piece with E-E-A-T optimization costs over ₹15,000 per blog post. If you write 20 such articles monthly, at ₹7,500 per blog, your earnings amount to ₹1.5 lakh. With a small team comprising two or three sub-writers, ₹10 lakh annual earnings seem realistic in 12 to 18 months.

It is all about niche and consistency. Generalist content writers struggle to succeed. The writer who owns a particular niche- health, finance, law, education technology- enjoys the reputation and gains retainer clients. Just one retainer client, earning ₹40,000 monthly, will change everything.

Starting Point: Create a portfolio consisting of 5 to 7 samples in the desired niche. Promote on LinkedIn and pitch to agency owners. Sites like Internshala and Upwork will help you get started.

2. Social Media Management

Today, every entrepreneur of any small business in India knows that being active on Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube is a must. But most of them don’t have enough time or desire to handle it personally. This is your opportunity.

A social media manager takes care of posting on schedule, writes posts’ captions, creates some simple graphics (using Canva), deals with community’s reactions, etc. For entry-level specialists, monthly prices start at ₹8,000–₹12,000. More experienced managers, who can produce some results, ask for ₹20,000-₹40,000 per month.

Managing 5 mid-size companies on a budget of ₹20,000 will bring you ₹1 lakh per month. That’s ₹12 lakh per year- from your apartment without any team needed yet.

But there is a skill limit here too. If you want to get more money per month, you should know about analytics, pay-to-play marketing, and algorithms of platforms. Any specialist who understands how to grow audiences and produce leads is guaranteed to find jobs. Otherwise, it will take three months to lose the client.

Initial point: Offer a local company to manage its Instagram for a month for free. These results will be the best case study. It will become your best marketing document ever.

3. Online Tutoring & Coaching

EduTech in India has come a long way. Parents are now ready to pay money for quality online tuition classes, and learners of all ages have signed up for various skills-coaching classes ranging from speaking English, exam coaching, digital marketing to financial planning.

Whatever your area of genuine expertise may be- be it CA foundation coaching, Carnatic music coaching, competitive programming or UPSC coaching—you can monetize it using an online mode. Sites like Teachable, Graphy, and even WhatsApp cohorts can help make the process seamless.

Tutoring 30 students at ₹2,000 per head, per month results in a monthly income of ₹60,000. Create a branded course, record it and make it available as a product to buy, and now ₹60,000 is starting to earn money for you on autopilot. Many solo entrepreneurs in India have already surpassed ₹10 lakh per year in their second year of efforts without needing to go viral; they got there through word-of-mouth and reputation building.

Starting point: Tutor whatever you know well. Do not imitate any niche just because it is lucrative; students can identify such imposters easily. Start your classes live with a group of 10-15 students first.

4. Video Editing & Reels Production

India is a country with a billion-dollar content creator ecosystem, where behind every successful YouTuber, Instagram Reels creator, and podcast host is a video editor churning out deliverables. The demand is massive, and there exists little supply at the middle level.

An editor skilled in editing Reels, YouTube videos, and basic motion graphics will charge anywhere from ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 per project. Editors specialized in a type of content, such as weddings, brands, and explanatory content, earn much higher. Long-term retainer deals with content creators that publish videos on a daily or weekly basis pay extremely well.

Get yourself trained in either DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere Pro, curate a strong portfolio of your work, and then reach out to content creators in your chosen field. A large number of content creators often mention the need for an editor in their YouTube Community section, and also on Twitter.

Starting point: Do 5-10 videos for free or a nominal rate, in order to build up your portfolio. Once that is done, reach out to content creators that have between 50K to 500K subscribers and are still growing.

5. Virtual Assistance & Operations Support

This is the most boring business venture on this list, but it is also one of the most stable. It is becoming more and more common to outsource the management of emails, calendar booking, research, data entry, CRM, and travel booking to reliable virtual assistants.

One of these virtual assistants, working for one client alone, can earn between ₹20,000 and ₹60,000 per month. Some do work for two-three clients at once, thereby earning a total of ₹80,000 – ₹1.5 lakhs per month. This job demands reliability and proficiency in written English.

India does have an edge in this field because of its time zone advantage relative to Gulf countries and Europe. Indian virtual assistants are in huge demand as part-time and full-time professionals.

Starting point: Your best bet is LinkedIn. Look for “operations assistant,” “executive assistant remote,” and “virtual assistant India.” Stress your reliability in your application.

The Honest Part

None of them will earn you ₹10 lakh in the first month. Most individuals spend anywhere between 12 to 24 months consistently working with clients, improving themselves, and building their reputations to reach that level of income annually. People who fail to achieve it tend to fail due to three reasons: either they price themselves too low and exhaust themselves, or they never specialize, or once they get two clients, they stop marketing themselves.

This strategy is rather mundane and effective: Choose one skill, become excellent at it, price yourself adequately, overdeliver on expectations, seek referrals, and repeat. There are enough opportunities for you to make money here, provided you keep up the good work.

₹10 lakh is not an unrealistic goal to achieve. This is a mark that thousands of Indians have reached each year in recent years, primarily behind the scenes, without getting viral recognition.

It’s now time for you to take the leap.
