Dr. Chandrani Prasad Verma, broke the institutional and societal barriers and made up a space for herself in one of the most male dominated industries of today’s world. She stands as a shining example of boldness, resilience, and ambition, in a world of rigid gender roles and discrimination.

She is known as India’s first female mining engineer, her work truly reflects that with every challenge she faced, she laid the foundation for a more inclusive and equitable future in an industry that was once closed to women.

Inspired by Her Father

Born on January 4, 1977 in Maharashtra. Dr. Chandrani was fascinated by her father, Devendra Prayag, who was a respected mining engineer in Western Coalfields Limited. She used to listen to stories of her father’s mining journey and the lives of workers. Growing up in a mining colony, made her absorb the culture of the coal industry and this planted a seed of what would become an enduring passion.

Even in a society where career choices for women are limited to education, healthcare, banking, hospitality, Chandrani imagined herself in her father’s path, wearing his helmet and gear. Showing courage, she dared to dream big and choose to make a career in mining, a field which is often dominated by men and also legally inaccessible to women back then.

Dr. Chandrani Prasad Verma: Breaking Mining Barriers

Chandrani faced intense resistance due to a colonial era law, The mines act of 1952. Which explicitly prohibited women to work in underground mines. This outdated law reflected the Patriarchal system of the time, demonstrating people’s perception of women being physically weak. This resulted in the refusal of female candidates in most of the mining Institutions in India.

Chandrani didn’t quit and with her father’s support filed a petition in the High Court, challenging the discriminatory system in educational institutions. This bold move of hers made a difference and gained her admission to one of the most prestigious colleges, i.e, Ramdeobaba Kamla Nehru Engineering College in Nagpur.

Charting New Paths in Mining

In 1999, Chandrani graduated as the top student of her class and officially became India’s first female mining engineer. Then in 2006, she went to study for Masters in Mining, from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur. Showing her passion and dedication to expand her knowledge towards the field she pursued doctoral research and became the first Indian woman to receive Ph.D. in mining engineering.

Dr. Chandrani joined the Central Institution of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR) as a research fellow and currently she’s serving as a Senior Scientist at CSIR-CIMFR, a reputed institution under the Ministry of Science and Technology. She has been working on the field of safety, sustainability and technological advancement of mining operations in India.

Over the years, Dr. Chandrani has assisted in many projects aiming to modernize mining practices and composed numerous research papers. She hasn’t only saved life with her expertise in highwall mining and energy pillar design but also enhanced productivity and reduced environmental degradation.

Beyond Firsts

Dr. Chandrani Prasad Verma’s is not just earning the tag of the ‘First Women’ in a field. It is about breaking stereotypes, fighting systemic injustice, and challenging the limit. Her efforts have earned her honor from Western Coalfields Ltd. As the First Lady Mining Engineer in 2000.

She also received the prestigious Hirkani Award from Door darshan Sahyadri channel, which celebrates women for their boldness and resilience. Dr. Chandrani Prasad Verma is a perfect inspiration for young women across the country. She stands as a role model in an industry where even today female participation remains scarce. Her resilience has been featured in several awareness campaigns, educational platforms and women empowerment conferences.

She reminds us that when courage is guided by conviction, it has the power to reshape narratives, break barriers, and inspire generations.
