Roshan Lal Soni, a 19-year-old boy migrated from Lahore to India with other countless families, during the partition of 1947.

Roshan Lal Soni started from scratch after migrating during the partition. Leaving behind everything he has only little money for survival. Therefore, after coming to Delhi, he started selling dry fruits in Connaught Place to fulfill his requirements.

Later, he moved to Karol bagh and inspired by the sweltering Delhi heat and his entrepreneurial mindset, he soon introduced the people of Delhi to his version of kulfi, a denser creamier frozen cousin of ice cream.

To prepare his kulfi fresh, Roshan used to carry heavy milk cans and walk several kilometers every day, from Shakti Nagar to Karol Bagh. The richness of flavor, the balance of sweetness, and the vermicelli falooda topping added a unique taste and contrast in texture of the kulfi.

The Inspiration Behind Roshan Di Kulfi

After Roshan Lal Soni passed away in 1997, his three sons — Joginder Kumar, Pradish Kumar, and the late Ashok Kumar — took over the business. Presently, the third generation, Ishan Soni and Ayush Soni, running the business.

Success without Challenges Isn’t Possible!

One of the most tough situations in the history of Roshan di kulfi occurred in 1997, when a bomb blast hit the shops building which caused significant damage to the shop and human lives.
Though all the shops near the area were closed, Roshan di kulfi, under the leadership of Joginder Kumar was reopened the very next day. But instead of giving up, the family reopened it the very next day, showing incredible courage and dedication.

What do you think would have been the favorite kulfi of people back then??

The foundation of Roshan di kulfi success is its signature Kesar Pista kulfi. It is prepared using the traditional methods, firstly the milk is slowly cooked until its texture thickness into rich Rabri. Flavors of saffron (kesar), cardamom, and pistachios (pista) are also added, and the mixture is frozen. For the dessert to be refreshing and deeply satisfying, it is garnished with the falooda and rose syrup.

Over the years, Roshan di kulfi added a variety of flavors such as mango, paan, chocolate, and sugar free kulfis for health-conscious customers. But the authentic kesar pista kulfi remains the crown jewel, i.e., universally loved.
