Tanushka Singh – An Army Brat With A Passion For Flying

A historic landmark was accomplished by the Flying Officer Tanushka Singh as she became the first woman pilot enduringly assigned to the IAF’s elite Jaguar fighter jet squadron which is a remarkable event for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and for women in combat aviation.

This is not just a personal success but also a memorable achievement for gender inclusivity in the armed forces reflecting determination, discipline, and disrupting stereotypes.

Early Life Of Tanushka Singh

From a very young age Tanushka was instilled with discipline, patriotism and the spirit of service as she was fortunate to be born into a family deeply connected to the armed forces. Her grandfather served in the military and her father, Lieutenant Colonel Ajay Pratap Singh (Retd.) served in the Indian army.

She was born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, but in 2007, her family shifted to Mangalore, Karnataka. Because of her excellent academic history, leadership qualities and a strong sense of purpose, many expected her to follow in her father’s path and join the army.

But she being a girl passionate about technology and aeronautics decided to pursue BTech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Manipal Institute of technology

Against The Odds

After getting inspired by India’s first women fighter pilots – Avani Chaturvedi, Mohana Singh, she decided to take on the not so easy path of becoming a fighter pilot in the IAF. She knew the fact that women in combat aviation were still in minority and very few got the opportunity to fly frontline aircraft.

Physical endurance, resilience, toughness, and years of disciplined training are required to get into this prestigious group and she with her determination got selected into the Indian Air Force Academy in Dundigal, Telangana. This marked the beginning of her transformation into a combat pilot.

Her Intense Training To Become A Fighter Pilot

Tanushka underwent three stages to achieve her dream. During her initial training days, she began training with the Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40 (HTT-40) and Pilatus PC-7 aircraft, and skilled herself in flying, situational awareness and adaptability. After this she moved to train herself with the Hawk MK 132, which is a jet trainer designed to prepare pilots for aerial combat with high speed. She gained the spot in jaguar squadron with her exceptional performance with SEPECAT Jaguar.

Challenges

Despite the progress made in the last few years, women in combat aviation still face several hurdles. They have to prove their capabilities to gain acceptance as it’s a male dominated field. Permanent combat roles for women are still low compared to men.

Fighter pilots had to undergo long duration missions which required extreme physical and mental endurance. Tanushka’s success is a hope for every young girl of India who dreams to break stereotypes in a male dominated fields

Impact On Future Generation

Her achievement is proof that no dream is as big as to be unattainable. Tanushka is an inspiration of hope for all the female aviators and her journey from a young girl to India’s first woman pilot in the Jaguar Squadron is all about her resilience and hard work. She has proved that when it comes to serve for the nation dedication, skill and determination matters more than gender.
