STORIES OF COURAGEOUS HEARTS WHO ROSE ABOVE THEIR DISABILITIES

Beauty, athletic bodies, sharp minds, perfection, and effortless success are what the world often celebrates. But true greatness often comes from pain, struggle, and imperfection embraced with pride and not perfection.

Disability is considered a weakness, but down the ages, countless individuals have overstepped their limits and turned their disabilities into the very reason for their successful life. They are the people who refuse to be addressed by their disabilities. They stood confidently before the world with their challenges, accepted them, worked with them, and changed the way the world defines success.

Let’s have a closer look at some celebrities with disabilities who have helped the world learn that disability is not inability.

Shekhar Naik was born into a humble family of the Shimoga district of Karnataka, which faced generations of visual impairments.

His mother was partially blind, and Shekhar’s life was shadowed by hardship from a very young age. He suffered a severe head injury at the age of eight, which caused him to lose his vision completely.

He began to see a new light when he was sent to a special school for the blind in Shimoga. There he encountered a plastic ball that made a sound when it moved (used in blind cricket, a version of the sport that uses a ball filled with bearings, to help players track it by sound).

The young Shekhar swung his bat, and in that moment, a new journey of his life began.

He spent hours training under the sun, learning to predict the movement of the ball through sound. His remarkable performance helped him progress from district to state-level tournaments and then to the Karnataka State blind cricket team.

Known for his aggressive batting style and sharp understanding of the game, in no time he made it to the Indian blind cricket team and became one of the most dependable players in the Indian squad.

Under the captaincy of Shekhar, India won the T20 World Cup for the blind in 2012, defeating their biggest rival, Pakistan.

Again in 2014, the team defeated Pakistan and won the One Day International (ODI) World Cup for the blind. From struggling to find light to getting honored with Padma Sri in 2017, he has come a long way, all with his dedication and determination.

Sudha didn’t stop there; she underwent rehabilitation with an artificial limb. And through relentless practice and sheer willpower, she relearned every step and movement. ‘Mayuri’, her comeback performance, proved passion can triumph over physical limitations and left the audience spellbound. She further went on to build a successful career in cinema and television. She has been honoured with numerous awards, including the national award. Sudha continues to be a motivational speaker, helping people to overcome challenges with determination.

She received care and motivation to dream big at the Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, Bengaluru. Soon she developed a love for athletics and began training rigorously, despite being confined to a wheelchair.

She started competing in track events and then went on to become India’s most decorated para-athlete, with over 400 medals (including 120 international medals, across events such as Commonwealth games, World Masters, Asian games).

Born in Uttar Pradesh, Arunima was a national-level volleyball and football player. While travelling on a train in 2011, she was attacked and pushed out of the moving train by robbers, due to which she lost her left leg below the knee. Lying on the hospital bed, she made a bold promise to herself that she would climb Mount Everest and mark the beginning of her new life.

With an artificial leg and unbreakable spirit, she began her training under the guidance of Bachendri Pal (India’s first woman to summit Everest).  Though her journey was filled with challenges and physical exhaustion, Arunima made history by successfully climbing Mount Everest. Proving that no disability can disable determination, she became the world’s first female amputee to achieve this feat. She also went on to climb the other highest peaks of all seven continents.

She has been honoured with Padma Shri (2015), Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award (2015), and numerous other awards.
